Bamboo resource development in the northern floodplains of India
CIBART is implementing a livelihood promotion and bamboo plantation programme with support from Sir Dorabji Tata Trusts in Eastern UP districts since July 2015. Broad goal of the project is to improve realization of potential of bamboo based livelihoods for the farmers and artisans in northern floodplains of India & enhance the livelihoods through integrated farming and techniques.
CIBART facilitated training for artisans to make new, local need-based, and technology driven products. One is a large storage unit for agricultural produce, the other is a bamboo boats and bamboo toilets. CIBART developed and prototyped three coracle boats and pea-shaped two long boats. Two of these were used to rescue 1,200people, some small livestock and their valuables in a period of four days. The effort was reported in the media and CIBART has supplied 19 boats to the district administration in this year. These boats are currently part of the flood preparedness effort by the district administration in the project areas. Preparations are being made to scale up bamboo boat building as its cost-effectiveness has been acknowledged.
CIBART conducts training to farmers in better management practices in bamboo plantation and harvesting areas to improve existing stocks and economic value.
