Bamboo charcoal, briquettes and rural electrification
CIBART partnered Jan Chetna Sansthan, a NGO in Rajasthan with access to more than 60,000 households and installed and commissioned a pyrogasifier of 20 kWe (gross peak) capacity in Chandella village in Abu Road. Both CIBART and JCS jointly worked to leverage the existing diverse biomass and use of briquettes in a small enterprise mode this model pilot a success.

The biomass gasifier converted solid fuel such as wood waste, saw dust, bamboo waste, agro-residue briquettes into a gaseous fuel through a thermo-chemical process that was used for heat and power generation applications. It primarily generated charcoal and gas as a byproduct. The pyrogasifier converted 40 per cent of biomass by weight into high grade charcoal and the process did not have any adverse environmental impacts.

The gasifier produced char/charcoals ideally suited for production of activated carbon for various water and chemical treatment processes and also high quality combustible gas that was used for power generation, which would run a wood chipper for feeding stock and household charcoal pulverizing and briquetting machine in no electricity villages. Biomass based power was also used to operate a flour mill in addition to providing electricity supply to households. Women became self-employed entrepreneurs. Household charcoal microenterprises were linked to collection centres and further to a briquetting enterprise. Buyers prefer briquettes that light up quicker and they burn for longer burning time.

Training and skill enhancement, Baran
CIBART conducted a training activity on bamboo crafts. The training was on value addition through technical and design intervention and training to impart skills and weaving methods so that they could train other artisans in their home areas.
